Heroic Firefighter Rescues Elderly Trapped in Burning House

Two firefighters of West Jakarta Fire and Rescue Sub-dept., M Rifai and Novirahman were willing to face the heat of the flames and thick black smoke to rescue two residents from the burning house at the Taman City Housing Complex, RT 16/RW 05, Thursday (3/29) night.

West Jakarta Fire and Rescue Sub-dept. Head, Abdul Cholik expressed that there were four persons trapped inside the burning house. After evacuating two people, both firefighters were back in to save the other two persons on the top floor.

When they wanted to bring them out, the fire suddenly grew larger and blocked their way. The condition of an elderly grandmother was no longer able to walk because of her breath congested by thick smoke.
Rifai immediately took off his fire-fighting clothes to cover her body and carried her while breaking through the flames in front of them.
"Both persons are rescued without injury. Yet, Novirahman and Rifai suffered burns. Rifai is rushed to Cipto Mangkusumo Hospital (RSCM), as he suffered burns on his back up to 60 percent. While Novirahman, should be outpatient, as his burns up to 20 percent on the chin and right foot," he stated.
As for the information, Rifai who has one child who has worked as a firefighter since 2004 and appointed civil servant in 2008, gets appreciation from Jakarta Governor, Anies Baswedan.
"This man suffered burns all over his body and is currently being treated at RSCM. He is willing to sacrifice to save the people. He is a hero. I applaud and appreciate to all firefighters," asserted Jakarta Governor, Anies, when he visited the fire location, Friday (3/30).
After undergoing treatment at RSCM for three days, Rifai's condition is getting better. But he still cannot get much communication.
